Usually, when Move Seniors Lovingly tours a retirement residence, it’s bustling with residents enjoying the best of their beautiful accommodations. What made this visit unique is that at my time of visit, Parkland Ajax was less than a week away from opening! It allowed us to see what went into thoughtfully preparing a retirement community for its new residents.
As I entered the spacious lobby adorned with silver, white and blue balloons, the staff hurried around, ensuring everything was perfect. Meetings were taking place, and gift bags were being stuffed, yet almost everyone I bumped into stopped and asked me if I had been taken care of. That one-on-one attention would make me very comfortable having an older loved one reside there.

“There is a family touch resonating throughout every detail in Parkland Ajax,” says Lorraine Shaw, Lifestyle Consultant. She’s referring to the fact that Parkland is family-owned, with roots in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Their family values ensure that the approach is always resident-first, treating residents like one of their own. Their personable touches can be seen throughout their retirement residences, with the Shannon Pub and Breton Café named as a nod to their origins. The serene shade of blue found throughout Parkland Ajax reminded me of the ocean, which I imagine might have been where they drew their inspiration.
Parkland Ajax is a tall, elegant building that celebrates the Great Lakes community it’s located in. It has 154 Lifestyle Apartment suites that are fully independent, located on floors five to 15. There are also 69 Supportive Lifestyle suites on floors two to four that offer additional levels of care. A supportive lifestyle includes meals, housekeeping, help with daily living activities, laundry, medication management, accessible design considerations, wellness programming and more. Lifestyle apartments are equipped with a full kitchen and allow their independent seniors full access to the building’s amenities and the option of adding on chef-prepared meals and housekeeping as needed. This will enable residents to age in place with their ever-changing needs being addressed. The suites in the building range from 400-1400 square feet, and there are six elevators in the building for ease of access.
Lorraine pointed out some beautiful touches in the lifestyle apartments, such as spacious stone countertops, plenty of storage and pull-out drawers for organization and accessibility. There was a ton of natural light streaming throughout. There was also a built-in microwave, full-sized fridge and washer and dryer. Lifestyle apartments also came with private balconies to enjoy the views.
Regarding transportation, there are 300 underground parking spots, valet parking, and chauffeur service available for the residents.

As far as amenities go, Parkland Ajax has it all. If you’re a movie buff, you can enjoy new releases or classics in their movie theatre. There is also a heated pool that the residents can utilize solo or with their families, making it perfect for visiting grandchildren! The games room has a pool table and a golf simulator for year-round enjoyment. There is also a full-service spa, a fitness centre and more. Every new resident is invited to meet with a wellness coach that creates a calendar of activities both at the residence and off campus to engage its residents on six levels of wellness: emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual and vocational. This might include anything from joining a walking club or Tai Chi class to an external author visit or musical guest. Your calendar can be as full or relaxed as you want at Parkland Ajax.
Parkland prides itself on its Red Seal chefs and staff, and residents can enjoy seasonally prepared meals such as Baked Herb and Parmesan Crusted Chicken and appetizers such as Phyllo-Wrapped Brie with Fig Jam. My mouth was watering just thinking about the gourmet options. Residents can dine in the spacious dining room or book a private room for family events. The possibilities are endless. As my tour ended, I imagined the dining room full of future residents, all the meals enjoyed there, and the everlasting friendships that would be made.

Leaving Parkland Ajax, I was excited about this new community offering its residents a lifestyle filled with possibilities. A week later, I saw an online post from Parkland announcing that the first couple had moved into the building! I couldn’t wait to hear more about how Parkland Ajax will flourish with both help of its staff and its residents. If you are interested in moving to a retirement residence in the area, it’s a must-see!
