Each month, Move Seniors Lovingly plans to profile one of the retirement residences they’ve had the pleasure of working with to showcase what makes them exceptional. This month, for March’s Featured Residence, Move Seniors Lovingly – Mississauga visited the serene Chartwell Robert Speck Retirement Residence.

Atmosphere:

“If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden” – Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett

When I first entered Chartwell Robert Speck Retirement Residence, I could see large windows looking out onto their spacious courtyard garden and walking paths. Even in winter, with nothing yet blooming, it was a beautiful backdrop to a warm and inviting retirement residence. It had the promise of future outdoor gatherings and celebrations at the epicentre of this retirement community.

I visited on Valentine’s Day and was lucky enough to hear through a resident of some of the festivities that had taken place the evening before with live music, champagne and black forest cake, amongst other indulgences. This is just one of many examples of the residence’s full and varied social calendar.

Adaire Seagrave, Retirement Living Consultant, says, “It thrills me to see seniors gaining independence when they move to Robert Speck.” In her eight years of working there, she’s seen residents who are timid by nature come out of their shells with the help of staff making introductions to wellness programs such as exercise classes or gardening clubs. After a couple of months, it’s as if a new world of possibilities has opened up to them.

Another aspect of Chartwell Robert Speck Retirement Residence that Adaire loves is how cultural diversity is at the centre of this retirement residence, reflecting the larger cultural diversity of Mississauga. Residents have shared personal tutorials on cooking meals inspired by their backgrounds that the whole community has learned from and enjoyed. It’s one unique way residents leave their imprint on the community.

Highlights:

Regarding their amenities, the previously mentioned courtyard garden is a hub for seasonal socials, special celebrations for families and friends, BBQs, and even summer campfires complete with smores and guitar playing. In winter, the wide paths remain walkable so that all residents can take in whatever sunshine they can, with accessibility always in mind.

The minute the weather warms, gardening enthusiasts can enjoy planting on raised garden beds. Even those who might not be able to partake in the gardening itself have a say over the types of plants and flowers that form the heart of the residence. There is also a winter greenhouse so plants can be tended to year-round.

Indoor amenities include a fitness room, a cozy library, a spacious dining room, and an activity room where residents can partake in art lessons. The activity room had lovely paintings made by residents on display when I visited, catching the winter sunlight.

Residents can start their day off leisurely at Chartwell Robert Speck Retirement Residence, enjoying catching up on current events with coffee and a snack at the bistro and maybe taking an exercise class before heading to the a la carte dining room for a seasonally-inspired lunch. On the day of my visit, the lobby was filled with a mix of residents socializing, residents’ grandkids walking the grounds, and even a sweet dog who seemed like quite the VIP (Very Important Pet) in this pet-friendly space.

For living accommodations, there are suites that check off everyone’s wish list. There are options for a one-bedroom, one-bedroom and den or a two-bedroom, each complete with a kitchenette, microwave, individual thermostats, weekly housekeeping, transportation services and more. Some suites have beautiful balconies overlooking the courtyard, so you only need to step out with your morning coffee to enjoy the liveliness below.

Since Chartwell Robert Speck Retirement Residence is located in the heart of Mississauga, residents can enjoy day trips and transportation services to Square One Shopping Centre, the Living Arts Centre, Mississauga Civic Centre, and more. There is also a visiting physician and various care services available on-site such as medication supervision, a blood pressure clinic, and a hearing clinic, to name a few.

As I left Chartwell Robert Speck Retirement Residence, I had a renewed sense that spring was approaching. It wasn’t just their focus on living in harmony with nature that drew me in, but the sense of fulfillment I witnessed in the residents and staff I had met. There was a calmness that couldn’t easily be replicated. This residence is a beautiful draw to the Mississauga community and is worth a look if you’re considering moving.
